INTRO
Located in Christchurch, Catnap Café is the South Island's first and only cat cafe. Our mission is to provide a safe, fun and relaxing environment where cats and people can enjoy each other’s company and to find homes for rescue cats.
As volunteers for Cat Rescue Christchurch, we are very aware of the overpopulation of stray cats in Christchurch and the limited resources available to help them. Although local rescue organisations do an amazing job and help hundreds of cats every year, we want to help them to help even more!
A cat café is the perfect way to work alongside these organisations to increase the number of cats being re-homed. We are essentially a big foster home for rescue cats and kittens that are available to adopt.
THE CATS
We are committed to providing a safe and relaxing environment for our cats, their welfare and happiness is our absolute top priority. We are huge cat lovers and this venture is driven by our desire to help reduce the stray cat population in Christchurch, to provide homes for unwanted cats and to promote adoption.
All of our cats are de-sexed, health checked, vaccinated, microchipped and up to date with flea and worm treatments. We have a partnership with local rescue organisation Cat Rescue Christchurch with all adoptions at the café happening via the Cat Rescue process but done directly at the cafe. From time to time we also work with other rescue organisations.
THE CAFE
As well as providing people the opportunity to interact with and potentially adopt cats, we also offer most of the key aspects of a traditional café such as great coffee, delicious sweet treats and free WiFi. We do not however, have a full service kitchen menu. We love all animals so our food, hot chocolate and chai powders are all totally vegan.
The cafe serving area and cat area are kept completely separate and we are operating under a council approved food plan.
WHO WE ARE
We are huge cat lovers and extremely passionate about helping cats. We’ve been volunteering for Cat Rescue Christchurch for over a decade and our experience fostering and socialising rescue kittens is what motivated us to open a cat café.
In June 2017 we launched a Kickstarter campaign which ran for six weeks and was an amazing success! This gave us the opportunity to really get things off the ground and in July 2018 we opened!
